Ty Detmer Heads to BYU as Offensive Coordinator

After six years as head football coach, Ty Detmer has said a fond farewell to St. Andrew’s for what he calls “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to serve as offensive coordinator at his alma mater, Brigham Young University. Ty told the Austin American-Statesman, “You would have thought taking this job might have been a no-brainer, but it wasn’t. It’s something I had to think long and hard about.”

Brigham Young is where Ty’s football career as a quarterback took off; after winning the Heisman Trophy in 1990, he went on to play in the NFL for 14 seasons. Ty began coaching at St. Andrew’s in 2010, and over the course of his tenure he helped lead the Crusaders to a school-best 8-1 record in 2015.

St. Andrew’s Director of Athletics Jeff McCrary remarks, “During his tenure, Ty took our football program to heights not seen before. In the process, he has made St. Andrew's football a program that people, whether athletes or fellow coaches, want to join. We wish Ty, his wife Kim, and four daughters well, and share our heartfelt gratitude for his six years of service to St. Andrew’s.”

We wish Ty the best of luck on his new journey. Go Cru!
