6th Grade Interviews Kindergarten for Writer’s Workshop

Mrs. Dorothy De La Garza, MS English Teacher
Sixth grade students in the new Writer’s Workshop turned into reporters this week interviewing kindergartners as part of a yearlong creative collaboration. The sixteen older students and their younger partners sat along the hallway engaged in lively conversations. Armed with a series of questions, the sixth graders quickly jotted down responses from their "celebrity subjects." Their notes and quotes later will become feature stories profiling each St. Andrew's kindergartner.
"Kathy Wynn and her teaching team eagerly accepted our proposal for our Middle School writers to practice their interviewing, note-taking, and writing skills in an authentic setting with our youngest learners," English teacher Mrs. Dorothy De La Garza said. "The delightful interactions between the students made it clear that listening, conversation, and social skills were practiced by all."

Writer’s Workshop is a new trimester-long course that all 68 sixth graders will rotate through during the year. MS Student Services Coordinator, Ms. Annie Sykes, also a professional writer, is co-teaching during this project.
