SAS Boys Lacrosse Wins the 3A SPC Championship

St. Andrew’s hosted the SPC Boys Lacrosse tournament this past weekend for both the 3A and 4A divisions.

 

The weekend started with the St. Andrew’s Boys’ lacrosse team ranked as the #1 seed for the 3A division, having gone undefeated in the regular season schedule, and it ended with the Highlanders lifting the Championship trophy.

Their path to the championships started Friday night with a hard-fought battle against St. Stephen's. It was a tight back and forth game that saw St. Andrew’s extend their lead to three in the 4th quarter before finishing with a 9-7 victory.  Sophomore goalie Gus Stratton had some big saves in the 2nd half that helped protect the lead. Junior Cullen Dawkins controlled the face-offs to help St Andrew’s control the game. The victory put the Highlanders in the championship game on Saturday against Trinity Valley out of Fort Worth.

The Championship game was one the players and fans won’t soon forget. It was a roller-coaster game that ended in an unforgettable comeback and overtime victory for the Highlanders.  It was a roller-coaster affair that saw Trinity Valley jump out to a 3-1 lead, only to have the Highlanders go on a run to take a 7-3 lead early in the 2nd quarter.

 

Trinity Valley settled down and put on a dominating performance for 2 quarters to take a 14-9 lead late in the 3rd quarter. But, it was all St. Andrew's from that point. Senior attackman Kris Latreille scored a goal with 10 seconds left in the 3rd to cut the lead to four.  Latreille and junior middie Grayson Coffin dominated the 4th quarter, pacing the Highlanders in scoring. Dawkins helped turn the tide at the face-off, letting the Highlanders control the ball and create scoring opportunities.  With 3:40 left in the game, Coffin tied the game, getting to the middle of the field and beating the goalie high.

 

Senior Dexter Glassco and junior Harrison Cauthen were 4th quarter defensive subs that helped solidify the defense and hold Trinity Valley scoreless in the 4th. The game went into overtime where, just over a minute in, Latrielle beat his man from behind the cage and turned the corner to put home the winning goal, in a 15-14 OT thriller. Latreille and his teammates were promptly swarmed by their fellow Highlander students, as they rushed the field in celebration.

This is the St. Andrew's Highlanders' first Boys Lacrosse SPC 3A Championship.

 

In the 4A SPC Championship game, the Episcopal School of Dallas (ESD) Eagles defeated the St. Mark's Lions 14-5. That was quite a turnaround from the regular season rivals, where St. Mark's defeated ESD 13-12.
